The Chief — Body Camera Radio Microphone
I teamed up with the Iowa State Police Department to create a device that combines the body camera with the radio microphone.

The Chief – Audio/Visual Police Equipment
How might we secure police body camera and radio to the officer?
Equipment Competes for Space

Radios and body cameras regularly fall off officers while they are performing their everyday tasks.
Radios will fly off the officers while in heightened experiences such as in a chase.
This equipment is vital for the officers and needs to be better attached.
Blossoming With Ideas

I utilized a lotus blossom technique to develop a number of varied ideas that approached the problem from different angles.
I sketched out sixty four unique ideas that could combine the police radios and body cameras for the officers.
I combined all of the best parts from the best ideas into a narrowing set of concepts.
Focusing in on a Prime Suspect

I was inspired by the rugged, geometric, evil look of other military police equipment.
I focused on giving the design chamfers and angles to maintain the resilience of its use.
The officers suggested I should split up the camera and radio for better independent use.
Printing Police Prototyping

I 3D printed a prototype of the radio, camera, and mountings to get a good idea of proportions and usability.
The mount in the upper right is one the police currently use for some of their equipment.
I captured some images with the officer using this prototype and edited the actual design on top.
Reporting to The Chief

The camera and radio work together to gather audio and visual data. The officers still use the radio for their communication and they can easily remove it from their chest. The equipment is no longer competing for the same space.
Putting it All Together

Bringing all of the elements together was a complicated process. It taught me the value of doing in-depth and thorough research.
